Job Opening:     Citizen Science Coordinator

Federal MEOPAR-Funded (Marine Environmental Observation, Prediction and Response Network)

Position Summary

This position supports the delivery of a citizen monitoring initiative focused on establishing baseline data on key seaweed species on Hornby Island , integrating scientific protocols, community engagement, and place-based education.

Responsible for: Coordinating and conducting a monthly seaweed monitoring survey, collecting and organizing survey data, coordinating volunteers to participate in the monthly surveys, delivering public education programming related to the seaweed monitoring and co-producing a final report summarizing findings and community impact.

Qualifications

  • Background in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, or related field
  • Experience with field-based data collection      
  • Demonstrated ability to manage community volunteers
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational and communication skills
  • Experience working with schools or youth programs preferred
  • Knowledge of coastal ecosystems and local species (asset)
  • Understanding of community-led and Indigenous-informed approaches (asset)

Time Commitment

 7 month contract (mid April- mid November)

Pay commensurate with experience.

First Credit Union Scholarships (open May 15th – July 15th)

One way FCU achieves their purpose of empowering through knowledge is by offering financial support through First Credit Union Scholarships. Scholarships are open to all First Credit Union members attending post secondary programs, including life-long (mature) learners.

Scholarships are $2,500 and are available to all First Credit Union members in good standing for one year or more. Applications are viewed through a diversity, equity and inclusion lens and challenges or barriers to education are considered. We strive to invest scholarship dollars equitably across the communities we serve.

Applications are accepted starting May 15th with a deadline of July 15th. Recipients are announced in early August. Due to the high volume of requests, only those selected for a scholarship will be notified.

What is it?      Six one-morning-per-week workshops with a focus on how emotions work in the brain and the body, how emotions can be recognized and managed, and how you can learn to better manage your emotions.
