This program offers tutor support one day per week to students attending Lake Trail and Vanier. The students in agreement with the staff and administration at both schools can attend Room to Grow on Wednesday mornings from 9:30am to 12:30pm instead of commuting to Courtenay. The Lake Trail and Vanier teachers provide the students with homework that will keep them in step with their classmates and that homework is supervised by a tutor on site at Room to Grow. This program operates on any 5 day school week throughout the 10 month school year. This program is funded by the Ministry of Education and funds from the Gaming Commission.
This program offers a supervised, fun, safe environment for teens in Grades 8 to 12 on Fridays. Special events and field trips are also offered throughout the year, funding permitted. There are two staff supervisors each night. They plan and oversee the activities, to ensure a fun and safe environment, contact us to be added to the e-mail list for events. This program is funded through user fees, the Ministry of Education and funds from the Gaming Commission.
Bruce Fairbairn Memorial Bursary
This bursary fund was created by the Rockin Stinkbugs in honor of Bruce Fairbairn. With various dance fundraisers and donations from Judy Glover, the capital investment for this fund is $17,420.00. This fund now sits within the Hornby Island Community Fund, adding to that capital base. This interest from the Bruce Fairbairn capital allows the distribution of a $500 scholarship to a Hornby community member of any age attending an accredited post secondary institution in BC.
Denman/Hornby Island Memorial Bursary
This bursary fund was created in 2003 by a Denman Island Resident who wanted to support musical projects on both Hornby and Denman Islands, especially activities that would integrate both islands and/or intergenerational activities. Both the Community School on Denman and Hornby in conjunction with the Denman Island United Church, oversee the fund and the distribution of the interest from that fund.
